The effects of global warming are particularly evident in Annecy, where hydrologists measure a drop in the lake’s water level every summer. With a front-row seat to these changes, the Compagnie des Bateaux du Lac d’Annecy decided to take action in March 2022 by signing an agreement with GCK Mobility to retrofit five cruise boats with electric engines. Philippe Gausset, the company’s president, emphasized that this was a move to demonstrate “responsibility towards future generations.”
Housed in the hold, GCK Battery’s lithium-ion batteries are completely invisible to cruise passengers. The conversion allows the boats to operate for a full day without recharging, or a total of 10 hours at a cruising speed of 20 km/h.
